Jack Hanley Gallery, San Francisco
Opening Reception, Thursday, October 13, 2005, 6-9pm
London-based artist Simon Evans is well-known in the Bay Area after spending 12 years in San Francisco. During his stay, Evans went from his first show in 2002 in the back room at Adobe Books to winning the SFMoMA’s SECA award in 2005. Known for his detailed and obsessively layered works on paper comprised solely of correction fluid, scotch tape and paper, Evans new work is harvested directly from a sketchbook, creating a narrative or travel log from one end of the room to the other. Inspired by writers such as Robert Owens, Raymond Carver, and Jonathon Swift, and post-punk bands such as The Fall, the text, which is the focal point of his work, lies between Heraclitean fragments and caustic song lyrics. Evans’ work has been included in group shows nationally at Andrew Kreps Gallery in New York, and the Orange County Museum of Art’s California Biennial and will be featured in two solo shows at the Aspen Art Museum in December, 2005 and at LFL Gallery in New York in 2006.
