MATTHEW HIGGS: ART IS TO ENJOY

Jack Hanley Gallery, Los Angeles, is pleased to present a solo exhibition of the work of New York based artist Matthew Higgs, titled “Art is To Enjoy. The show will include various found printed materials, from framed book pages and exhibition catalog covers to photographs of books.
Higgs’ practice stems from countless hours spent in used bookshops, gleaning shelves of disparate materials with varying visual properties. For the past twelve years he has been working exclusively with found literary material. The printed matter is re-contextualized to address issues of authorship, originality, vandalism, typography, and linguistics amongst other things.
Matthew Higgs (b.1964, Wakefield, England) is a curator, critic and artist currently living and working in New York. Over the past fifteen years he has organized more than one hundred and fifty exhibitions and projects in Europe and North America. His writings have appeared in more than fifty books, catalogs and periodicals, including Artforum and Frieze. Since 2004, he has been the director and chief curator of White Columns, New York, where he has organized more than thirty individual exhibitions and projects.
