Donald Urquhart
September 9 – October 7, 2006
Opening Saturday, September 9, 6-9pm
The Jack Hanley Gallery, San Francisco is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new work by Scottish artist Donald Urquhart.
Born in Dumfries, Scotland, in 1963, Urquhart later moved to London in 1984, and established a friendship and collaborative role with contemporary Leigh Bowery, where he embraced the heady drag-performance scene of which Bowery and his circle were pioneering innovators. Starting in 2000, Urquhart made numerous drawings that were meant to serve as flyers, posters and wall decorations for 'The Beautiful Bend', an eclectic and gloriously camp nightclub which the artist co-founded in the early 1990s with Sheila Tequila and DJ Harvey. Interest in the imagery and artwork for the flyers, illustrated booklets, and posters for this club has resulted in a number of exhibitions of these sophisticated, graphic, and darkly humorous pen and ink drawings
Donald Urquhart’s recent solo exhibitions include: There’s a wee girl at my school, Herald Street, London (2006); Another Drama, Schnittraum, Cologne (2005); and a forthcoming show at Maureen Paley in London (2007). In 2005 he also exhibited in the group shows I still believe in miracles/Drawing Space (part I), Musée d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris / ARC au Couvent des Cordeliers, Paris, Becks Futures, ICA, London, and Other People’s Projects, Herald St, London, White Columns, New York. Urquhart currently lives and works in London.
