Art in America Review of Finestra Aperta

“Finestra Aperta”

Jack Hanley Gallery,
327 Broome Street

Of the four artists included in "Finestra Aperta," Shara Hughes's gestural, textured paintings hew most closely to the exhibition's titular theme of an open window. In paintings like Cave Coven or Over the Overcast (both 2015) Hughes creates an arched void in the middle of the canvas through which surreal, not-quite-placeable landscapes are depicted. Despite being less effective at encouraging viewers to peer into them, the other works in the show—Annie Thornton's large-scale photo collages, Elizabeth Jaeger's black ceramic vessels set into spindly steel stands and Meredith James's video Window Loop (2008)—are no less intriguing.
